Sri Sri Ravi Shankar

Sri Sri Ravi ShankarIf Spirituality is the banana, then religion is its peel‘ said Sri Sri Ravishankar to explain the distinction between the two with a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye. He radiates happiness and has a childlike countenance like Lord Krishna. He travels the globe and has touched the lives of over 300 million people through personal interactions, public events, teachings, Art if Living workshops and humanitarian initiatives.

Art of Living center is very active in Jakarta, Indonesia and is graced by Sri Sri Ravi shankars visit every year. He was here in April this year on his way to Bali where he held the world peace meditation along with thousands of Balinese hindus. His vision is of a violence free, stress free society through the reawakening of human values has inspired people to work towards the betterment of the society. Last year he conducted the World peace yagya as was done by Sage Markande a thousand years before in Bali, island of the Gods.

The Art of Living is an educational and humanitarian non-governmental organization, present in 140 countries around the world, managed mainly by volunteers who are living the values as taught by the founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar. The organization has workshops and programs for all age groups. Art Excel for children, Youth empowerment and leadership programs and other workshops.

Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, while in Jakarta spoke at the Indonesia Business Leader Symposium on Ethics in Business – Complimentary or Contradictory – One might argue what might a spiritual guru do in a business setting, but we should not lose sight of the fact that the primary capital/asset of any business is its human capital. ‘Trust is the breath of business, ethics its limbs, to uplift the spirit its goal. One of the many challenges facing corporations and politicians today is to ensure that booming economies and profits do not weaken, but instead promote rising standards of ethical conduct and integrity. To achieve this, we need to spiritualize politics, globalize wisdom and socialize business‘ said Sri Sri Ravi Shankar.

Motivation is the key to promote productivity in business however this is an external factor and Sri Sri Ravishankar stressed on inspiration which comes from within to be more important. To illustrate his point he asked if Mahatma Gandhi gave pay hikes to all his disciples to motivate rather it was through fostering belonging to a common purpose and to each other. This is an ideal situation and we can follow some pointers in our own organisations such as:

1. Create a sense of belonging in the staff for the company
2. Take personal interest in the employees career and personal goals
3. Allow interaction and feedback
4. Adopt a company social project

It was a different perspective on company human resource policy. The symposium was attended by a select group of Indian and Indonesia business leaders and journalists, who then were taken through a 10 minute mediation by the Guru himself. The breathing mediation was a primer to his Sudarshan Kriya that is said to facilitate physical, mental, emotional and social well being. The Sudarshan Kriya was inspired by his silent meditational retreat in 1982, which he has since patented. Guruji explained how every emotion and feeling has a corresponding rhythm in breath and when we are in harmony with our body and soul its like music. Day to day stress and pressures can affect this harmony and the Sudarshan Kriya therefore brings back the balance. This technique is taught at many medical centers where it has been medically proven to cure a host of ills and promote health.

There is no denying the fact that ethics are complementary in every human situation be it your personal and spiritual growth or business growth.

Prospecting for Passion

At almost every seminar, motivational talk, or training you go to, or in every self development book we read, the message invariably is to live your passion and follow your dreams to be successful. But most of us do not even know what our passion is! How then can we live our passion, without having even discovered as to what it is? We are so caught up in the nitty gritties of life that we just live life on auto pilot and fail to find the nuggets of passion in our lives. Continue reading

Brand ‘YOU’ Online

Back in September 1997 the front cover of Fast Company signified the importance of branding for executives with the headline ‘A Brand Called You – you can’t move up if you don’t stand out.’ The same message is still being spread on a daily basis. In a sea of sameness, to be found, you need to find ways to stand out.

Last year, Time magazine carried an article on a study by team of social scientists concluding that the practice of self-Googling (or “ego-surfing,” as it’s sometimes called) can partly be traced to a rise in narcissism in society, but that it is also an attempt by people to identify and shape their personal online “brand.”

Famous or not, we brand ourselves daily through how we act, speak and look. Most of us do it unintentionally, unaware of the messages we send out. It is only when someone we know and respect says ‘that doesn’t seem like you’ about something we’ve done or said that we get a glimpse of this continuous process. For business people there are many elements that shape your personal brand – from what you wear, the industry you work in, your imagery, to the messages you deliver and your online brand footprint. If we can define our personal brand fully and accurately we can leverage it to maximum effect through offline and online networking. Continue reading

Is Your Pitch Perfect

During a Networkers session I go to, each member has a minute to introduce who they are, what they do and what they can offer or in some cases what they might be looking for. The Harvard Business School online states ‘Whether you are trying to raise capital, promote your company, or promote yourself, it’s essential to have an elevator pitch. You need to communicate your main message quickly, clearly, and distinctly to someone who doesn’t even know you. A good pitch takes planning and practice to deliver it quickly, on the spot, and under pressure.’
Rather than being to close the deal, the goal of an elevator pitch is to just set the hook; to start a conversation, or dialogue, with the audience. However, and most importantly, an elevator pitch is a teaching tool designed to give the audience just enough information that they will have a sense of what you are talking about and want to know more. Second, and just as importantly, it is designed to not give the audience so much information so that they feel overwhelmed (and tune you out). Think drinking fountain, not fire hose, or as Shakespeare put it ‘brevity is the soul of wit’. Continue reading

Fashion, Function and Fun = Cool and Connected

‘I just finished an 8.01km run with a pace of 5’39″/km with my Nike + GPS app. One really cool thing is every time someone ‘likes’ my post — I get a cheer in my headphones!’ was my friend’s status update. Wearable, real time technology is here and not just reserved for the likes of James Bond anymore.

According to Wikipedia, ‘Wearable technology is clothing and accessories incorporating computer and advanced electronic technologies. The designs often incorporate practical functions and features as well as making a statement or establishing a technological look.’ Technology has moved beyond wireless and portable to wearable.
